Croquet England Diploma awarded to Andrew Jackson and Hilary Bird

The Club is pleased to announce The Croquet England Diploma for 2024 has been awarded to 2 members, Andrew Jackson and Hilary Bird!

We congratulate both Andrew and Hilary on this achievement.

ANDREW JACKSON:

Andrew Jackson took up croquet at Guildford and Godalming in 2018. Since that time, he has exemplified the word ‘invaluable’. We really don’t know what we would do without him.

He is an enthusiastic GC player, competing typically in C-level tournaments with occasional forays towards B-level. He has represented the club on many occasions, particularly in the SECF/Croquet SE leagues. But his main, and huge, contribution has been off-court.

His jams and preserves have brought in funds for the club, and he is a frequent member of the tournament catering team. Seeing that we were relatively short of GC referees, Andrew qualified a couple of years ago and now regularly gives up weekend days to referee. That has helped managers of tournaments enormously. He is also very active in setting up lawns, erecting marquees and so forth when tournaments are run. Andrew is a keen and effective handyman. All clubs need one and Andrew has, over the years, played this role to perfection. If he becomes aware that a job needs doing, it’s as likely as not that he will have done it before anyone has asked him.

Over the past year or so the club has undertaken the major development of installing an irrigation system for all four lawns. It was a complicated project needing the coordination of club members, electricians, suppliers and contractors. That coordinating function was performed by Andrew, whose background is legal rather than construction – or engineering-related, and who had to operate outside his comfort zone. We take our hats off to him for what he achieved for the club.

We believe that all-round commitment of this nature is deserving of recognition, and we have no hesitation in proposing him for the award of a Croquet England Diploma.

HILARY BIRD:

Hilary Bird has been a member of Guildford and Godalming for some 10 years and a committee member for around 7 of them, serving as Secretary from 2017 to 2023. The club transformed from 4 lawns in a part of a field to 4 lawns in a separate, fenced-off, area with a simple clubhouse, opened in 2017. That made it possible to run more tournaments, mainly through the Croquet England Fixtures Calendar but also events hosted on behalf of Croquet England and the WCF.This transformation has, naturally, involved members in a huge amount of extra work and organisation, and Hilary has been at the centre of that. She took over responsibility for maintaining the clubhouse, together with organising and providing catering for tournaments and club matches.Hilary is active in GC, AC and short croquet, and is a keen promoter of SC as a stepping-stone from GC to AC. She manages GC teams in the jurisdiction of the SECF/Croquet SE and is the club’s representative on that body. Within the club, she was instrumental in the construction of a new website, took responsibility for liaison with our overarching organisation, serves as our safeguarding officer, and was responsible for the researching and procurement of club logo clothing. But it’s not just all those official things that Hilary is noted for – it’s all the unofficial tasks she volunteers for – hoop setting at 6 am, giving tournament competitors lifts to the station, helping to erect marquees, setting up lawns on tournament days, doing laundry for a visiting competitor (yes, really!) and so forth. There must, by now, be hundreds of people from outside the club who are aware of the huge contribution made by Hilary.

GC Team B 21/06/24

On Friday 21 June Team B, consisting of David Boyd, Graham Lamacraft, Martin Birch and Roseann Sullivan played West Worthing at home.  It was a clear warm day, and the lawns were running fast.

West Worthing won both the first doubles matches.  In both cases the scores were very close.

The singles matches were also dominated by West Worthing. Graham won his match, and Martin and Roseann’s matches both timed out, with WW in the lead in both cases.

At this point it was time to enjoy the delicious whiskey cake baked by Maggie Boyd, from a family recipe.

The last set of matches saw mixed results.  Graham again won his single, however West Worthing won the other 2 matches.

By this time it was after 5:30PM, and all agreed it was an enjoyable afternoon.

Event held at Club for Charles Russell Speechlys

On the evening of 12 June, the club was the venue of a corporate event held by Charle Russell Speechlys LLP. The night was clear, and the lawns looking great. Besides the drink and food provided by Charles Russell Speechlys, there was a short introduction to croquet as well as a mini tournament held. A good time was had by all.

Winter League Presentations

Last Saturday morning members gathered at the club house for the first “bacon butty” social. After chatting and enjoying breakfast, the presentation of awards for the winter competitions were distributed by Andrea Huxley.

Winners were:

  • Golf Handicap Winter League 7+: Frankie Lea
  • Golf Handicap Winter League -6: Graham Lamcraft
  • Golf Level Winter League: Douglas Shand
  • Golf Doubles Winter League: Wendy and Andrew Lockwood
  • AC Winter League: Peter Adams

After the awards were presented members took advantage of the dry weather, and took to the lawns. All four lawns were in use playing short, association and golf croquet.

As there were many able bodied croquet members present, a team was put together by Andrew Jackson, comprising of Andrew Lockwood, Phil Tremble, Julie Tremble, Ian Taylor and Vernon Salt, to install the new memorial bench. The bench was donated to the club by the family of Barry Gould. Barry was a loyal and active member of the club for many years. The club wishes to thank Barry’s family for this generous and fitting donation.

The “bacon butty” social was deemed a success and we plan to have more in the future.

Irrigation system has been commissioned

Our irrigation system was commissioned on 21st April.  This has been an aspiration of the club for years.  Those of you who have played at the club in the last couple of summers understand why.  No more brown lawns for us!

This could not have happened without the financial support received from club members, friends, and the CA. Special thanks go to Andrew Jackson and Julie Tremble who spearheaded the project. And of course many thanks to all of the club members who had volunteered their time and effort to help install the system.

Irrigation installation is under way

This could not have happened without the financial support received from club members, friends and the CA.  Special thanks goes to Andrew Jackson, and Julie Tremble for obtaining the relevant permissions, researching and sourcing the system and equipment, as well as project management.

And of course many thanks to the number of club members who have volunteered their time and effort to help install the system, in less then ideal weather conditions.        The current date for completion is 21st April.

WCF Tier 3

Guildford and Godalming Croquet Club, hosted the much anticipated World Croquet Federation’s Golf Croquet World Team Championship Tier 3 2020  (that is correct, 2 years late due to covid).

The tournament was scheduled for 21-23 July 2022 with teams from Czech Republic, Iran, Mexico, and Portugal.  Shortly before the tournament was to start it became apparent visas for the Iran team would not arrive in time and only one person qualified for the team would be able to come. It was agreed Omied Hallam would captain the unofficial Iranian team, dubbed “Iran Plus”, and the remainder of the team would be drawn from GGCC members, John Gosden, Jan Honeysett, Andrea Huxley, Andrew Lockwood, Bernie Phillips, Stephen Stuart-Matthews, and Julie Tremble.

The Iranian Plus team did GGCC proud, drawing with Mexico.  The official outcome was Mexico gold, Portugal silver and Czech Republic bronze.

At the end of the tournament, the players voiced their appreciation to the club for the welcome, and hosting of the event.  It was deemed a success, enjoyed by players, volunteers and spectators alike, which would not have happened without the huge effort put in by GGCC volunteers.
