PJ’s Pot is the trophy for GGCC’s internal handicap competition which was played on Friday 29th June. 16 players had volunteered for the competition and for 6 of them it was their first ever tournament. The players handicaps ranged from 3 to 12 but with all players coming from our club it was (I hope!) a non threatening experience. Even so there was a lot to learn!
The morning started with four blocks of 4 players playing all play all. With handicap play and such a difference in handicaps the games were timed as for some of the lower handicapped players 10 hoops for a win was their target.
We stopped for a picnic lunch before returning to play. The top eight players went into a knockout competition for the trophy while the bottom eight played for the plate.
The Plate semi final was between newcomers Chris Fox and Diana Birkett and Marion Sizeland and Lynn Edge. Chris Fox then overcame a challenge from Lynn Edge to win the Plate final.
In the main event there were hard fought battles between the strongest 8 players. Eventually Andrew Lockwood secured 3rd place by beating Paul Stroud and Giles Carpenter overwhelmed Vernon Salt to win PJ’s Pot.
GGCC use this competition to identify our players to qualify for the next round of the GC All England Handicap Competition where we have 4 places. So Giles, Vernon, Andrew and Paul will be going forward to play in the area final. Good luck to all four.
Congratulations to all the players and especially our first-timers. I hope this will be the entry to more tournaments for you all.
