GGCC v Hurlingham CC in the Murphy Shield

It wasn’t the warmest day but the two teams met in good spirits to play in the national Inter-Club competition – The Murphy Shield.

Round one comprised a doubles match between the two lowest handicap players on both teams and two singles matches played by the other two pairs. The doubles match was a very close fought affair. Both sides had players who could clear their opponents balls if they were in any danger of running a hoop. The first game took an hour and a half and was won 7-6 after an almighty tussle on hoop 13. Game two was equally well contested with the Hurlingham couple winning 7-5. So it was one game each. It was decided to stop for a lunch break and complete the doubles game at the end of the match if a win was needed to break a tied situation.

Lunch was delicious – many thanks to Hilary Bird for the catering, from both the GGCC and the Hurlingham players .

On to the singles. Our four players played really well with Phil Davies and Andrew Lockwood winning their matches in 2 games while Phil Tremble was forced to play three games to subdue his opponent. Unfortunately Julie lost her match in two games with both players agreeing that Mark ( from Hurlingham) had had the most amazing luck! Some games are just like that!

So a win for Guildford and Godalming 5 games to 1 with the doubles declared a draw. Well done team! Now onto Round 3.
