SECF League results 2012
SECF AC U League – G&G 10th of 15 teams
SECF Golf Handicap League – G&G A – 1st and G&G B – 26th of 28 teams

18/10/12   G&G Team A win the SECF Golf Croquet Handicap League 2012 The results of the 2012 SECF leagues were announced today and confirmed that G&G Team A won the Golf Croquet Handicap League. Congratulations to team members Mike Huxley, Andrea Huxley, Charles Martin, Joan West and Julie Tremble.

16/10/12   End of Season Social and Presentation of Awards  On Tuesday evening members and guests enjoyed a ‘bring and share buffet’ kindly hosted by Andrea and Mike Huxley at their home. Mike presented trophies to the winners of the internal competitions and then brought members up to date on the club’s performance in SECF leagues.

10/10/12   Lawn Improvement Programme All four lawns were scarified today thanks to the great kindness of Duncan Hector who drove over from Letchworth to lend us two lawn tractors with a scarifier and collector. Not only did Duncan leave home at 5.00 am but he also put in a full day’s work with the tractors before setting off for home in the evening rush hour. Arthur Lindley efficiently organised his press gang to pile the detritus into two long ‘barrows’ and he and Tony Mrozinski got to play with the tractors.  The rest of the press gang refused the offer to drive the tractors realising that they could not match Tony’s standard. Our grateful thanks to Duncan Hector without whose input we would not have been able to achieve so much in such a short time. Thanks are also due to Arthur and Tony for implementing the lawn improvement programme and to the ‘volunteers’ who undertook the less glamorous but no less essential tasks.

26/09/12   SECF AC U League v Purley Bury The final U League match of the season was played at home against Purley Bury on Friday, 28 September, the home team winning the match by 1 game. G&G 4: Purley Bury 3.

It has been a season of mixed outcomes for G&G in the U League.  Of the 4 matches to be played our team has won 2, lost 1 and conceded 1.

18/09/12   All England AC Handicap Final  Two members of our Club, Ian Fugeman and Stephen Stuart-Matthews had qualified for the final held at Ramsgate. Not only were the lawns in perfect condition but on the Saturday the sun shone throughout the day and the breeze was moderate. At the end of play on Saturday both Ian and Stephen qualified for the semi-finals each winning all three matches in their respective blocks. On Sunday the lawns were still fine, but the weather was overcast and there was a strong, chill wind blowing off the sea which caused problems for some players.  Stephen and Ian were in different halves of the semi-final. Stephen won his semi-final decisively 26+ but Ian, who had been well ahead, made an error which his opponent took full advantage of going on to win +2. The final saw Stephen meeting Charlie Martin from the host club and, although Stephen received two rounds of applause for brilliant shots, on this occasion the match went to Charlie Martin with the result +16. There was a long wait for the play off for third place to finish, once again Ian was well ahead but a blobbed hoop let his opponent in to hoover up the hoops and draw level.  As Ian got in time went and then his opponent played his last turn and took a final hoop to win +1. Mention must be made of the Mayor and Mayoress of Ramsgate who sat for over 3 hours facing the wind and who still had smiles on their faces when they presented the trophy.

13/09/12   SECF GC Handicap League Team A v Surbiton Congratulations Team A on a superb performance. Match result: G&G A 8: Surbiton 1.

07/09/12   Woking One-day Golf Handicap Tournament Congratulations to Mike Huxley who won this tournament with 5 wins out of 6 matches. Andrea Huxley goes from strength to strength and her performance in the tournament was such that her handicap has gone down to 4.

05/09/12   SECF GC Handicap League Team B v Dogmersfield (home) The match got off to a hesitant start when one member of the home team was unable to make it and another member had to be found to replace them. Dogmersfield were understanding but the home team were clearly wrong footed. Match Result: G&G B 3: Dogmersfield 6.

02/09/12   All England AC Handicap Area Final at Compton. Three members from G&G qualified for the area finals this year. With 5 wins from the 5 games played, Ian Fugeman came out a clear winner Stephen Stuart-Matthews, with 3 wins, will also be one of the top 4 from this Area Final to go forward to the All-England Final at Ramsgate on 15 & 16 September. Best of luck to them both!

29/08/12   Mid-Surrey Federation of Townswomen’s Guilds  33 TWG members and relatives disregarded the threat of rain and turned out in force for their annual croquet tournament. Fifteen teams competed for the impressive trophy. “Team Hammer” won.

28/08/12   SECF AC U League v Ealing The team of Mike Thompson, Arthur Lindley, Barry Gould and Tony Mrozinski made a successful start to the league against visitors Ealing. Match Result: G&G 5: Ealing 2.

23/08/12  SECF GC Handicap League Team A v Parsons Green Team A maintained their winning run at home to Parsons Green who, unusually, fielded a team entirely composed of players with an 8 handicap. Match Result: G&G A 8: Parsons Green 1.

18/08/12   AC Class Singles event, ‘C-level’ section at Hurlingham Congratulations to Robert Bateson and Arthur Lindley who took first and second prizes respectively.  Robert, with 6 out of 7 wins, received the Younger Cup which has an almost continuous record of winners since the 1920s.  Arthur, with 5 out of 7 wins, took 2nd prize.  As a result, both Robert and Arthur also achieved handicap reductions to 4½ and 5 respectively.

17/08/12   Gretta Morley A service to celebrate the life of Gretta Morley was held at Christ Church, Guildford following a private family cremation.  Ten members of our club attended and shared fond memories of Gretta with her family and many other friends.

04/08/12   AC Friendly Rother Valley After light showers in the morning the weather stayed fine for the return AC match against Rother Valley. Although the croquet was competitive it was a very relaxed occasion with a buffet lunch on the lawns and tea and cake to finish the day. Each team fielded one member playing in their first external association match: hopefully the first of many for each of them.  On this occasion the result went to the home team with G&G winning 5 to 2.

24/07/12   SECF GC Handicap League Team A v Rother Valley G&G A made it two wins out of two. After the nail-biting away win at Ealing last month, today’s match was slightly more comfortable. G&G won both the opening doubles and then proceeded to take all four singles in the second round, to lead 6-0. The match was therefore won after two rounds. In the final round of one double and two singles, Rother Valley rallied somewhat and took two of the three games. Match Result: G&G A 7: Rother Valley 2. (MH)

19/06/12   Croquet by Candlelight. We were unbelievably fortunate that amidst the spell of heavy rain and strong winds the weather turned clear and fine on the day of the Croquet by Candlelight social. 30 members and guests played golf croquet and Mike Thompson was seen demonstrating his skill with the one-handed grip, the other being reserved for the wine glass. A splendid bring and share buffet was enjoyed by all and then as the sun set and the light died members took to the lawns to play Pirates.

18/06/12   SECF GC Handicap League Team A v Ealing Our Team A made a successful start in their first match of the season at Ealing, narrowly winning by 5 games to 4.

08/06/12   Longman Cup v Woking In appalling weather, with gale-force winds and driving rain, the G&G team of Robert Bateson, Mike Thompson, Andrew Fewster and Arthur Lindley battled unsuccessfully against a team of experienced players from Woking in the preliminary round of the Longman Cup, the competition that G&G won last year. All players struggled to overcome conditions in which the ball would travel twice as far with the wind as against it, and swing over a foot to one side on a long shot in a cross-wind – not to mention both the player and the mallet head swaying in the wind too.  But in the end Woking proved more the masters of the conditions and won by 5 games to 2. (AL)

07/06/12   A friendly AC match at Rother Valley had to be abandoned at midday when the lawns became flooded. A double and two singles were played resulting in a 1:2 defeat. With a win to each side in the singles and with the doubles match approaching the time limit on an even score a nail-biting finale occurred. After time had been called Mike Huxley made a valiant attempt to approach his opponent’s ball down the length of the lawn but was hampered by the surface water. Rother Valley then ran the winning hoop.

21/05/12   Hamptworth B-Level GC Tournament Mike Huxley won the tournament on Saturday, 19 May with a straight set of 6 wins out of 6 games.

17/05/12  AC Open Challenge Cup Advanced held on 12-13 May 2012 was won by Jamie Burch. Second place went to Nigel Polhill with Mark Fawcett taking third place out of a field of twelve competitors.

15/04/12   One-ball Charity Handicap Tournament Congratulations to Anthony Tutt on winning and thus qualifying to represent G&G at the Winchester One-ball Charity Handicap Competition in May. Joan West, a previous winner, came a close second.

Winter Golf Handicap League Results

21 members competed in the 2011-12 Winter Golf Handicap League with a total of 166 matches played between October and March.  Charles Martin was awarded the prize for the highest percentage of matches won, with Ian Fugeman coming a close second.  The prize for playing the most matches went to Joan West with husband David hot on her heels.  Congratulations to Charles on winning his first event and to Joan who encouraged so many members to turn up and play throughout the winter.  The prizes were presented by Mike Huxley.
